Michael Martin Kofler completed his studies with distinction at the Vienna Musikhochschule with Werner Tripp and Wolfgang Schulz, and at the Musikakademie in Basel with Peter-Lukas Graf.
In 1987, while still a student and only 21 years old, he became the solo flutist of the Gustav Mahler Youth Symphony Orchestra under Claudio Abbado and was invited by Sergiu Celibidache to take the same position at the Munich Philharmonic. He has won several prizes in international competitions, including the Mercadante, Prague, and ARD as well as prizes from the Munich Concert Society, Austrian state of Carinthia and Austrian Education Ministry and the Culture Prize of his native city of Villach, Austria.
Kofler has performed many concertos, recitals, and chamber music worldwide. He has appeared as a soloist with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields; the Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras of Prague, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Salzburg, Linz, Warsaw, and Zagreb; and the Vienna, Munich; and Württemberg Chamber Orchestras, among many others.
Since 2016, he has conducted numerous orchestras including the Pforzheim Chamber Orchestra, Györ Philharmonic Orchestra (Hungary), Sinfonietta Cracovia (Poland), and the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra (Korea).
Since 1989, Kofler has taught as a full-time flute professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has been invited to serve on juries at significant competitions and gives regular masterclasses in Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Mr. Kofler has made several CDs as well: concertos by C.P.E. Bach, Quantz, and Mercadante (Discover International); the piccolo concerto by Boris Papandopulo (Classic Production Osnabrück); the Khatchaturian flute concerto (Universität Mozarteum Salzburg); and all of the Mozart quartets as well as the Michael Haydn quartet (Mozartiana Classics).
